How to make your own chocolate sauce

Simple Recipes / Ciara Kehoe

When I was a kid chocolate ice cream seemed like a mythical dessert something imaginary kids in movies ate out of towering glass cups while sitting in gleaming 1950s-style ice cream parlors. In my world the hippie-parent world of lentil and carob desserts and early 1980s organic food co-ops ice cream came in little scoops served in dry cake cones. The ice cream itself was the treat; adding more sugar would gild the lily.

It wasn’t until I was 21—yes you read that right when my college boyfriend (now my husband) took me to Sundae School on Cape Cod—that I tried my first sundae. Josh’s parents had entered the 80s with a more mainstream Chef Boyardee-friendly approach to food and for him getting a sundae on Cape Cod was a summertime ritual. He insisted that I order a real dessert with lots of warm chocolate sauce and a ripe cherry on top. I was immediately hooked.
