Not so long ago beer in America was generally boring and bland. Beer was beer. In movies and TV shows you would see someone walk into a bar and say "Give me a beer" and actually get served. It's not like people were ordering "one glass of wine" or "one liquor" in the '70s and '80s. What started Prohibition the demise of independent brewers was almost complete with the rapid industrialization and consolidation after World War II. By 1978 there were only 89 breweries in America. With a dwindling number of producers competing to make the most cost-effective pale lager the American brewing industry just wasn't all that interesting.
