How to Keep Berries Fresh Longer – How to Wash Berries to Keep Them Fresh Longer!

At Serious Eats we take the science of food storage—wait for it—seriously. I remember reading Kenji’s article on storing tomatoes in 2017 and immediately turning all my tomatoes and chiding my then-boyfriend for thinking I was having a really weird moment storing produce. Daniel’s article on chilling bread is a regular life-changer according to the feedback in our SE staff’s email inbox. And Genevieve’s deep dive into the steps involved in storing strawberries remains a perennial favorite of the site even in months when there’s no point in eating strawberries!

So it makes sense that I would take the official Serious Eats blueberry version of those experiments very—wait for it—seriously! And I did! If I wanted to figure out the absolute best way to store blueberries for longevity freshness and flavor I would have to be very precise. Like my husband who now rightly thinks I have completely lost my mind about: precision produce!!

After a deep dive into existing blueberry storage literature cross-referencing my green bean and cherry tests from last year and looking at every produce storage listing on Serious Eats I identified and designed a series of tests to determine the best way to store blueberries. I tested 18 different methods including those that supported existing theories about the best way to store blueberries as well as those that directly contradicted agreed-upon methods. In addition to challenging accepted methods from the world outside of Serious Eats I also put berry storage methods from within the Serious Eats canon to the test to see if what worked for say strawberries also worked for blueberries. The! Results! Will! Shock! You!
