Here's how to subtitle my YouTube videos with the NEW subtitles tab in YouTube Studio
Basically, I use YouTube's auto-generated CC captions to get a transcript, and then edit that transcript to fix it.
Then it's simple to paste that into the /"auto-sync/" window of the subtitles tab.
If you are looking to add on-screen subtitles – burned into the video, this is not the right video for you: BUT you can use my method to get the TRANSCRIPT you will need for these subtitles, so I hope this still helps you!
Why make my own subtitles?
– Fix my auto-generated captions, spell my name correctly, remove wrong words, etc.
– Help people around the world watch my YouTube video in different languages (via automatic translation)
– Get a cool /"Subtitles/" or CC icon next to my video!
– Plus, you know, I help people who are hard of hearing or those who don't know my English accent.
BONUS – Also shows you HOW TO ADD SUBTITLES IN ANOTHER LANGUAGE to your YouTube video. You can use your transcription and built-in machine translation to run subtitles or closed captions alongside your video in English (or whatever the primary language is)

*WHAT TO DO IF THE AUTOMATICALLY GENERATED TRANSCRIPT DOES NOT APPEAR*
This happens to me even when speech is clear and audio levels are good and high
I download it again and use the transcription to paste it into the first video.
If it still doesn't work, on the video's subtitles page, choose ADD
Then AUTOMATIC SYNCHRONIZATION
You have to type the speech manually, but you can do it while you're watching the video and even check the "Pause while typing" box to help you pause the video while you type.

HOW TO ADD OR CHANGE OR EDIT MY SUBTITLES OR SUBTITLES ON MY YOUTUBE VIDEO:
Go to your YouTube Studio dashboard,
and in your video, click on the subtitles tab on the left side.
Then click on the words /"DUPLICATE AND EDIT/"
Which opens a window with the transcription in one block.
If there are timecodes and they are split, just click /"EDIT AS TEXT/" and it returns to transcribing into a block in the window.
