Identity thieves use this simple trick to steal your credit card. Credit card skimming is a common practice in which a thief places a fake magnetic stripe reader on top of an existing legitimate card reader. These are usually placed on unmonitored point-of-sale machines, such as at gas stations or ATMs. This way a thief can install them without arousing suspicion. These devices look exactly like the real card reader and are placed directly on the real reader. So you won't know if there is one or not. And if you swipe your card in one of these skimmers, the device steals your card information and the thief can rack up a bill as big as they want. And you have to pay for that. To protect yourself, simply shake the card reader before swiping with a magnetic strip, like this. If the device is not moving, you can swipe the card, but if there is a skimmer, it will come off and you will have simply avoided dealing with credit card theft.
