How ONE Flash Can Help You Master Portrait Lighting and Take Stunning Photos with Gavin Hoey

Single flash portraits are a great way to master the basics of studio lighting. Limiting yourself to just one flash can make it more difficult to achieve the exact lighting style you want. With just one flash, you have to compromise on looks, but along the way you'll learn a lot about how to light portraits in different ways.

But where to place a single flash? Photographer Gavin Hoey suggests there are only three places to place your light. This can be in front of your model, beside them, or above them.

Gavin explains that direct front lighting is perfect for models who like to spin and move. Side lighting gives shape to the face and drama, but limits where your model can look. Finally, overhead lighting helps remove shadows from backgrounds.
