CNBC Marathon explores the transformation of the mobile phone market.

Made in China. It is a common expression known by many. Cell phones, television screens, and game consoles are just some of the millions of electronic devices manufactured and imported from China to the United States daily. China has controlled the smartphone manufacturing market for years. While some industries, like the semiconductor industry and the electric vehicle battery market, are scrambling to build new factories in the United States, tech giants like Apple and Google are not making the same efforts to achieve it. CNBC explores why tech giants are producing phones overseas and whether it makes sense to move production to America.

Dumb phones, once considered obsolete, are still prevalent around the world, accounting for about a quarter of actively used mobile phones. Although affordability in developing countries is an important reason for their continued use, there could be an unexpected but potential increase in their use among younger generations aware of the potential that smartphones could have on mental health. While Nokia and Motorola are still among the biggest dumb phone makers in the world, Punkt. and Light are two start-ups that are banking on the resurgence of popularity.

For years, BlackBerry was the most popular smartphone brand in the United States. After failing to adapt to the rapidly changing industry and falling to competitors like Apple and Google, the company took an entirely new direction. Now the company focuses solely on software and cybersecurity, trying to leave iconic cell phones in the past. CNBC visited BlackBerry's autonomous vehicle innovation center and interviewed CEO John Chen to see what the company is doing now.
