We can override security restrictions implemented by Google by uninstalling updates to our built-in Files app.

If you are having difficulty accessing the /Android/data and /Android/obb directories on your Samsung Galaxy smartphone or tablet, I have a way to solve this problem.

Google has been trying to block access to these two files for several years. When this restriction was first implemented as Scoped Storage, almost all popular file management applications found a simple workaround that allowed them to still access these directories.

But stricter updates have been released and many people can now no longer access these folders with their favorite file management app of choice. So today I'm going to show you a quick and easy method to regain read and write access to these folders and all the folders they contain.

To get started, we need to open the Settings app.
Next, we'll scroll down a bit until we see the Applications menu.
Next, we'll start scrolling through this list until you find the Files app.
It should even have the same app icon you see here.

This is a built-in file manager app that most OEMs replace with their own, but it is this app that Google uses to block access to the /Android/data folder and the /Android/obb folder .

And since it's an app update that added this restriction, we can tap the 3-dot menu icon here in the top right corner.
So that we can then select the Uninstall updates option.

This will remove all installed updates for this application. Including restrictions on data and obb directories.

And once these updates are uninstalled, you can use the file manager app of your choice.
And as long as this application has implemented the initial workaround for Scoped Storage, it should work as before.

We can test this by opening my file manager app of choice, Solid Explorer, and then trying to navigate to the /Android/data folder for an app like Obtainium, a popular emulator, or whatever app you're trying to add files. .

Now, I understand that some people won't want a system app like the Files app to be deprecated.
Sometimes these app updates include security fixes for some pretty critical exploits.

And even though we can't open the Play Store app to install the latest update, we can load it manually.

So what I recommend is to visit this page on APK Mirror and download the latest copy of the app from there.
It comes as a bundled app, so you'll also need the APK Mirror installer.

But as you can see here, we can manually update the Files app so that it incorporates the latest changes.

Even if you've updated the app, your File Manager app of choice should still have access to the directory you gave it access to.

But if you ever encounter this problem again, a quick uninstallation of these updates will allow the workaround to grant you access to the /Android/data and /Android/obb folders again.

These steps that I showed you here today may work on devices from other OEMs. I haven't been able to test this with a phone running MIUI yet, but I think it will work exactly the same.

One issue I encountered when testing with other phones is that it won't work with my Google Pixel 8. This may be because the built-in Files app still has the updated version, so even if I try to uninstall the updates, it still keeps a version of the app on the phone that has the fixes included.
