In this quick tech video, I'll show you how to authorize and deauthorize a Mac computer from your Apple ID. Apple uses IT permissions to allow you to play content purchased with the same Apple ID on your devices. This has been around forever and started in iTunes. This is why you can still hear the iTunes permission. But now that we no longer have iTunes, this is done in Apple Music. Additionally, we are still limited to only allowing 5 devices at a time. So if you have more than 5, you will need to remove one to replace it. We will see this at the end.

To authorize a new Mac computer, open Apple Music.

Select Account from the top menu bar, hover over Permissions, then to authorize the computer, choose Authorize This Computer. Enter your Apple ID and password if prompted and confirm. It will then attach and authorize this machine to your Apple ID account.

If you no longer use this machine in the future, choose Account again, Permissions, and then choose Deauthorize This Computer. It will then remove it from your Apple ID.

You can also check the number of computers you currently have authorized. Again, choose Account from the menu, then select View My Account.

You will then see the Computer Permissions section and the number of devices currently authorized.

A fairly common thing is that you may be considering authorizing a new machine, but discover that you no longer have any permissions. If so, you can re-access a machine you don't use as often and deauthorize it. But what happens if it's a machine you no longer have access to? Unfortunately, you cannot see the list of computers in your account and select them individually. So what Apple is asking you to do is deauthorize all computers at once. Then you can browse and re-authorize the ones you want. Hopefully Apple changes this in the future, but that's how it's always been.

And that's how you authorize and deauthorize computers on your Apple ID account.
