Juicing or Blending…Healthiest for Your BODY! Dr. Mandell

With fresh juices and smoothies becoming more popular it is important to know that there are a few minor risks. I stress that these are VERY minor and nothing that should deter anyone from drinking juices or smoothies for all the wonderful benefits including better health more energy a delicious alternative to sugary drinks especially for your kids and my favorite the easiest way to get all the recommended daily servings of fresh fruits and vegetables. In fact drinking a fresh juice or smoothie is about the healthiest thing you can do for yourself your family and your friends! So let’s be aware of these concerns but keep a healthy perspective!

According to the CDC fruits and vegetables are the leading cause of food poisoning in the U.S. (although dairy products cause more hospitalizations and poultry causes more deaths). The fruits and vegetables most at risk are melons (the rough rind traps bacteria that are transferred to the flesh when cut) and pre-cut leafy greens.

The CDC and FDA recommend rinsing your produce with cold water not buying pre-cut fruits and vegetables and growing your own sprouts. Washing with soap is discouraged. For simple guidelines see this article from the University of Maine.
