Make sure the house is safe and secure for your child as they begin to explore their territory.

Step 1: Check your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
Make sure every room in the house has a working smoke and carbon monoxide detector.

Advice
Program emergency numbers into your home and cell phone speed dial. Include the poison control center, your doctor and your spouse's number.

Step 2: Cover the Outlets
Cover all unused electrical outlets with child-resistant plates.

Step 3: Store toiletries and makeup in a hard-to-reach place.
Store alcohol, household cleaning products, laundry detergents, medications, toiletries and cosmetics in a tall cabinet.

Step 4: Turn down the water heater
Lower the temperature of the water heater. If your baby crawls near the water heater, he or she may get burned. Keeping it at a lower temperature also reduces the risk of burns from running hot water.

Step 5: Manage the Furniture
Take care of the furniture. Cover tables, fireplaces, and anything else with sharp edges with thick tablecloths, soft blankets, or pillows. Secure bookshelves, entertainment centers and desks to walls so they don't tip over. Apply a stain remover to upholstered furniture and rugs to protect them from spills.

Step 6: Store Your Fridge Magnets
No matter how cute your fridge magnets are, they can pose a danger. Toddlers like to chew on small objects, so remove all magnets from the refrigerator and store them in a safe place.

Step 7: Shorten Blind Cords
Shorten draperies and blind cords out of your baby's reach. They may present a choking hazard.

Step 8: Create a Baby Toy Box
Keep sibling toys out of your baby's room and common areas so your little one isn't tempted by small rooms. Create a designated baby box or toy box with just their toys.

Did you know?
In the United States, a fatal injury from poisoning, falling, choking, or burning occurs every 16 minutes.
