When I was little the best part of celebrating Christmas at my grandparents’ house was stuffing my face with the seemingly endless supply of poached shrimp. I would sit next to their walnut coffee table and tease my uncles about dipping shrimp after shrimp into spicy horseradish cocktail sauce and there was something about the sheer quantity I ate that made it all feel special.
What I didn’t realize at the time was why there was so much shrimp: shrimp was relatively cheap. And until I read the AP’s Pulitzer Prize-winning 2016 investigation into Southeast Asia’s fishing industry abuses I didn’t fully understand the true cost of that cheap shrimp.
But it's not just about shrimp: the fishing industry is a quagmire of all kinds of ethical issues.
