In this quick tech video, I'll show you how to change the iPhone camera's photo format from HEIC to JPG.

HEIC, HEIF, and HEVC are newer, more efficient file formats, but certainly not as universally compatible as JPG. In fact, you're probably watching this video because you tried to send or download a photo taken on your iPhone and realized it didn't work because it was in HEIC format. There are ways to convert the photo to JPG, but here I will show you how to simply change the default so that it is always saved as JPG. Note though that JPGs take up more space, so this is something you'll need to remember.

To switch to JPG format, open the Settings app.

Here, scroll down and tap Camera. At the top from here, choose Formats.

You will then see under Camera Capture, High Efficiency and More compatible. And as I already explained, the most recent formats are very efficient and the most compatible is JPG. There are some exceptions here with video, and that tells you that higher frame rate and HDR footage requires high-efficiency formats.

Change this setting to Most Compatible and you're good to go. Now when you take photos, it will save them in JPG format.

And that's how you change the default photo format from HEIC to JPG on an iPhone.
