To begin, let's start with one of the first things I do when I buy a new Android device: the keyboard. This is the quickest way for me to gain a sense of familiarity and is the first thing that annoys me about a lot of manufacturers' custom interfaces (just like how you came to learn the layout keyboard for most computers, I've just gotten used to a specific way I want my Android keyboard Thanks, conditioning!).

If you type /"keyboard/" into the Play Store, you will be presented with many interesting replacement options. There are some that let you slide the keys to form words, others with unconventional keys with multiple letters per key that guess the letter you actually want, others in crazy colors and styles, and most have many more customization options than your manufacturer. I thought you would like it.

Changing the keyboard is a bit like downloading any other app; Find the desired keyboard on the Play Store and install it. The difference is that you have to configure it after downloading it. And while some will walk you through this process when you install the keyboard, not all do, so it's probably best to know how to do it manually. Here's how:

So it occurred to me that a lot of people don't realize how much customization you can do on an Android device. From home screen launcher, theme, phone dialer, messenger and messaging app, the list is endless. That's one of the beauties of Android: the complete freedom to replace what you don't like with a developer's best attempt. I think this warrants a small video series here on the site (if not a public service announcement broadcast across the country).

To begin, let's start with one of the first things I do when I buy a new Android device: the keyboard. Here's how to replace the keyboard your manufacturer installed on the device with one of the many other keyboards available on the Play Store (and there are LOTS).
