Steps for Choosing Hurricane Window Protection:
1. A layer of 5/8-inch-thick plywood can protect the windows of a 2×4 traveling at 34 miles per hour. An identical layer of oriented strand board (OSB) cannot.
2. Covering the windows with resin-treated ballistic nylon will prevent the 2×4 from shooting into the house, but it will not prevent the window from shattering.
3. Metal counter shutters are permanently mounted on the house. If hit in the right place, the shutters can bend inward and crack the window.
4. A window with impact-resistant glass will shatter when hit, but the window will not shatter or crack.
