How to colorize Windows 11 or 10 folders with Rainbow Folders?

Microsoft started supporting changing login screen background color from Windows 7. One can also use the free Login Screen Background Changer software to easily change the login background. Windows folder icon can also be changed easily in all editions of Windows without any third-party tools. There is a built-in feature to change the Windows folder icon. However, there is no default option to change the color of a folder.

How to change Windows folder icon?

Step 1. To change the Windows folder icon, right-click the folder and select properties.

Step 2. Click the Customize tab.

Step 3. Click the Change Icon button.

Step 4. It will automatically open the system default icons folder.

Step 5. Select any icon you want to apply and click Apply and OK to change the effect.

As noted above, there is no default option to change the color of a folder. Therefore, we will use the help of a free tool called Rainbow Folders. Rainbow Folders is not only free but also effective. According to Rainbow Folder official website, it is compatible with Windows 98, ME, 2000, XP, 2003, Vista, 2008, 7, 2012 and Win 8. In our test, it also works with Windows 11/10.

How to colorize Windows 11, 10 and 7 folders with Rainbow folders?

Step 1. Download Rainbow Folders from its official website (http://www.english.aionel.net/) and install it on your computer.

Step 2. During installation, make sure that the Install System Shell extension is checked.

Step 3. After installation, right-click on the folder whose color you want to change.

Step 4. Select “Rainbow Folders” from the context menus.

Step 5. This will open the “Rainbow Folders” window.

Step 6. Select the color you want to apply and click the Colorize button to apply the changes.

Step 7. Now refresh the screen or restart your PC to change the effect.

If you want to color multiple folders at once, there is an option at the top to choose "Multiple Selection". Rainbow Folders also makes it quick and easy to rebuild the system icon cache, which can be found under the options. It offers three types of file styles: Classic, Typical and Modern. To remove the color from a folder, select the folder and click "Extract Color", this will set the default color for the folder.

Overall, Rainbow Folders is a handy tool for customizing folder color. If you want to set a different color for different folders, you should have this free software.
