If you’re a beginner cook or want to try a new method for cooking a whole turkey our oven bag recipe is the easiest. It produces juicy tender meat and completely avoids the brining or basting steps that most turkey recipes require. By retaining moisture and heating the oven bags the bird cooks faster and it’s a breeze to catch all the juices to make gravy while the turkey rests. Seasoned butter is placed under the skin to provide extra moisture as it cooks and those buttery drippings make a great base for gravy.

Oven bags have been around for decades and if you ask anyone who was in charge of cooking when you were a kid probably used an oven bag. The classic bag technique is an easy way to cook turkey and chicken but it’s also a great tool for cooking lamb shanks and pork or beef. Make sure you get one of the FDA-approved nylon or polyester bags (which are also BPA-free) before you start cooking but most importantly double-check that the bag you’re using is an actual oven bag not a brine bag or plastic bag.

Our method is very forgiving and if you accidentally overcook the bird the moisture in the bag will still help you get juicy meat. Once you learn how to cook a turkey in a bag you will never go back to any other method.
