About this video: This video is our complete guide on how to create a Minecraft server in 2024. We cover everything you need to know about hosting and joining a Minecraft server on your own computer. All this is done using the official Minecraft server software for free.
There are, however, some things you need to know before creating a Minecraft server on your own computer. First of all, you'll need a decent computer to host a server, as it can be resource-intensive. Additionally, the server is only for your friends and family as it is hosted on your own internet. You will also need a good internet connection and some technical skills to host a server. You'll also need to install Java, and we have guides for getting Java in the description above!
With this in mind, we can now explain how to create a Minecraft server in 2024. To get started, you will need to download the Minecraft server software. You can find a link in the description above that will take you to our complete text guide on creating a Minecraft server. On this page there is a link to download the server software.
Click this link to access the official Minecraft website. On this page, click on the “download minecraft_server.jar” link. The link will contain the current and latest version of Minecraft. When you click on this link, the download will begin immediately.
Once the server.jar is downloaded, create a new folder on your desktop called “Minecraft Server”. Next, drag and drop the server.jar file into this folder. To start your server, double-click the server.jar file. Some files and folders should appear, and one of them should be a eula.txt file.
Open the eula file in notepad and, assuming you agree to the EULA, replace "eulafalse" with "eulatrue" and save the file. Now when you double-click server.jar, your Minecraft server will start.
To join this server, you can use the “localhost” IP address in Minecraft. However, to get your friends to join your Minecraft server, you will need to do port forwarding.
There is a full guide on how to port forward a linked Minecraft server in the description above, but the quick guide states that you will need to forward port 25565 over TCP and UDP protocols. Once done, your friends will be able to join you using your public IP address. Unfortunately, port forwarding is required to play Minecraft with your friends on your server.
