Mangosteen: How to Pick Peel and Eat It?

The tropical fruit mangosteen is grown in abundance in Thailand. It is the size of a tennis ball with a firm skin that is deep purple. This unique fruit has a sweet taste and a very soft texture and is rich in antioxidants and micronutrients. It can be found in Asian supermarkets and markets.

Good mangosteens have healthy looking green caps and a nice glossy sheen on their outer skin. The fruit should be firm and free of cracks. Make sure the fruit is free of insects and avoid buying fruit with hardened beads of yellow resin on the outer skin as these often contain areas that have suffered from resin seepage.

To open your mangosteen hold it firmly on its side and make a cut with a serrated knife. The older the mangosteen the harder the skin will be (a sawing motion may be necessary). Cut shallowly around the perimeter about 1/4 to 1/3 inch deep just enough to make a gap that your fingers can fit into. You don't want to cut all the way through the center.
