It's completely legitimate to be concerned that someone will hack your network, gain access to your computer, and then use your own webcam to monitor you. Most people guard against this by placing a piece of tape over their webcam. However, there is a less complicated approach to this that still achieves the same goal: simply disable your Windows webcam. Disabling your Windows webcam only takes a few minutes and will help ensure that anyone accessing your computer can't spy on you.

Now let's move on to the steps to disable your webcam in Windows 10.

Step 1. Right-click the "Start" button on the far left of the taskbar. The Start button looks like the Windows icon. A menu appears. Click /"Device Manager/" in the menu. The Device Manager window appears.

Step 2. Click to expand your computer name if it is not already expanded. Locate the cameras or imaging devices in the list of options. Expand the option you find in your list. In this example, I will expand /"Cameras./" I can see my webcam listed under Cameras.

Step 3. Right-click on your webcam. A context menu appears.

Step 4. Click "Turn off device/" in the context menu. A message appears warning you that disabling your webcam will cause it to stop working. Click /"Yes/" to completely disable your Windows webcam. You will see a downward-pointing arrow appear on your webcam icon, indicating that your Windows webcam has been successfully disabled.

You can always re-enable your Windows webcam at any time by right-clicking your webcam and then clicking "Turn on device."
