If you really don't use Windows Search much, you can turn off indexing completely by turning off the Windows Search service. You will still be able to search, it will just take longer without an index.
If you're considering disabling search because it slows things down, we recommend minimizing the indexed files and folders and seeing if that works for you first. And if you experience crashes or inaccurate searches, try rebuilding your search index. You should also note that other applications, notably Microsoft Outlook, use Windows Search to enable searching in those applications, so you will have to do without quick searches in those as well.

When you search for files and folders, Windows automatically detects the folders you are searching and adds them to the index. The index is created and managed by Windows Search, a Windows service that runs in the background. You cannot uninstall Microsoft Search Indexer because it is not a program, but you can stop the service from the Services section of Control Panel. If you think the index is not helping you find specific files faster, you can safely stop the service.
First of all, let me say that this article is not referring to the Windows Experience Index, but rather to the Windows 11 indexing feature, which is related to file searching. We briefly review its features and explain how to enable and disable it.
