With the rollout of iOS 16 for iPhone and iPadOS 16 for iPad in late 2022, Apple is finally offering users the ability to edit sent text messages. The main downside to editing a text message on your iPhone or iPad is that you can only edit a sent message up to five times within a 15-minute window from the time you send it. It's also important to keep in mind that if the person you sent the message to is using iOS or iPad OS 16 or later, your edited message will replace the old message. However, if the person you sent the message to is using iOS or iPad OS 15.6 or earlier, they will receive a new message with your updated verbiage.

Now let's move on to the steps to edit a text message on your Apple iPhone or iPad.

Step 1. Launch the Messages app on your iPhone or iPad, then navigate to the message you sent to someone in the last 15 minutes that you want to edit. As a reminder, you can only edit a message a maximum of five times in 15 minutes.

Step 2. Tap a finger on this message for a few seconds to display a menu.

Step 3. Tap /"Edit/" in this menu. This message will change to be editable.

Step 4. Edit the text of your post that you want to edit, then tap the check mark next to that post when you're finished editing it. Your message will return to normal, but you will now see the word /"Modified/" directly below it. And again, if the user you're sending this text message to is using iOS 16 or iPad OS 16 or later, they'll see the same text /"Edited/" below this message, and you'll both be able to click / "Edited/" to expand the post and see previous versions of the post. Alternatively, if the person the message was sent to doesn't have iOS 16 or iPad OS 16 or later, they will simply receive a new text message each time you make a change.
