Desktop apps that worked perfectly on Windows 7 and even Windows 8/8.1 often struggled to run on a Windows 10 system.

To make older apps run smoother, Windows 10 has a compatibility mode in which apps treat the operating system as an older version of Windows. Today, many more applications are compatible with Windows 10 than five years ago. This option is therefore rarely used, but it still exists and is useful for continuing to run recalcitrant programs.
Compatibility mode can be enabled for desktop applications. This doesn't work for UWP apps. Additionally, not all desktop apps support compatibility mode.
