In this short tutorial, I'll show you how to enable or disable function keys in Windows 10. You change the settings in your BIOS menu, or hopefully you have a relatively new keyboard that has a key Fn lock.

So, once upon a time, Windows only had function keys defined as F keys. While these function keys still exist, you now also have action or shortcut keys that you use for tasks like raise or decrease the volume, switch to airplane mode, etc.

Fn Lock
We start with the first method, where we try to enable the Fn lock key. If that doesn't work, move on to the second method where we change the setting in the BIOS menu.

Some keyboards have a dedicated Fn lock key. First look for this on your keyboard and try to enable or disable function keys by pressing the key.

Dell and Lenovo laptops often have the Fn lock key set to the escape key.
Enable or disable Dell function keys: Fn Esc.
Enable or disable Lenovo function keys: Fn Esc.
HP laptops often use the Fn ShiftLock or Ctrl Fn combination.
For ASUS, this is often the Fn Insert or Fn ShiftLock key combination.

If none of these solutions work, you can always search specifically for your model.
Enable or Disable Function Keys in Windows 10 with BIOS

To access the BIOS, you must restart your PC. For my laptop, I can access BIOS by pressing F2 during boot. This may be different for other models.
Then I need to move to the main tab. Here you have the setting, Function Key Behavior. This is the setting you need to change from Media Key to Function Key.

After that, press F10 key to save and exit BIOS settings.

So, for people with other brands, your BIOS menu may be slightly different. For example, for Dell laptops, the Function Key Behavior setting is in the Advanced tab instead of the Primary tab.
