How to enable or disable Microsoft Wi-Fi Direct virtual adapter on Windows 11?

In Windows 11, the Microsoft Wi-Fi Direct Virtual Adapter lets you connect two devices using Wi-Fi Direct without using routers or Wi-Fi hotspots. One Wi-Fi is used to connect to a Wi-Fi network, while the other is designed to communicate directly with other devices (monitors, printers, scanners).

With the Microsoft Wi-Fi Direct virtual adapter, you can turn your computer into a wireless hotspot and allow other computers to access the Internet through it.

Essentially, this technology virtualizes your wireless network adapter just like VMware or VirtualBox does. Once virtualized, you can convert one physical wireless adapter into two virtual adapters. With this setup, you can use one virtual adapter to connect to your regular wireless network and the other to connect to another network, such as a WiFi hotspot. This will allow other people to connect wirelessly to your Windows computer as if it were a hotspot.

You can disable this feature if you are not using it or if you are having connection problems with external routers or modems. Here's how to do it.

How to disable or enable Microsoft Wi-Fi Direct virtual adapter on Windows 11?

To disable or enable Microsoft Wi-Fi Direct Virtual Adapter in Windows 11, first right-click the Start button and select the Device Manager option.

Next, click on the View tab from the menu and check the Show hidden devices option.

Next, expand “Network Adapters” to view all Microsoft Wi-Fi Direct virtual adapters on your computer.

Now, right-click on the Microsoft Wi-Fi Direct Virtual Adapter entry and select the Turn off device option from the menu.

When prompted, click the Yes button.

If you have multiple Microsoft Wi-Fi Direct virtual adapter entries, disable them all.

And if you want to enable any Microsoft Wi-Fi Direct Virtual Adapter entry, right-click the disabled one and select the Enable option.

That's it.
