How to enable USB support in VirtualBox for your SmartHome
1. Start VirtualBox
2. Select the VM you want to add USB support to, but don't start it
3. Click Devices, USB, USB Settings
4. Click Ports
5. Click USB
6. Check the box next to the USB controller
7. Select USB 3.0 (xHCI controller)
8. Click the icon at the top next to USB device filters to add a default filter.
9. You should see the new Filter 1 now appear in the USB Device Filters window.
10. Click OK
11. You should now see USB support available when you start the VM on which you just enabled USB support.
12. This will need to be done for each VM on which you want USB support in

With a combination of the latest version of VirtualBox and/or MAC OS X/Windows, you may not be able to use your computer's SD card slot to transmit files to/from a VM. The solution is to get a USB card reader and insert the SD/microSD card into it. After inserting the USB drive, you may receive a prompt indicating that the device is accessible through the host or guest VM. Select Guest VM.

This will also work with the USB to serial adapter I use to access network equipment. This is how you can add a serial port to a VM. In case of Windows 10, it automatically downloaded the necessary device driver. Using a USB to serial adapter gives you the ability to use a dial-up modem or other devices that require a serial port to work with Windows or another operating system that you are using in a virtual machine.
