Hyper-V export is the process of exporting a selected virtual machine, including its virtual hard disk files, virtual machine configuration files, and Hyper-V snapshots, to a single drive. This operation can be performed when the VM is online or offline. In earlier versions of Windows (before Windows Server 2012), you could export Hyper-V virtual machines only when they were disabled. Hyper-V export can be done only on demand.
Hyper-V Import allows you to recover selected virtual machines that you previously exported from a set of configuration files. Hyper-V virtual machines can be imported to a source Hyper-V host or a new one. Previously, Hyper-V import had to be preceded by Hyper-V export. However, starting with Windows Server 2012 R2, you can now import Hyper-V virtual machines without first exporting them. During Hyper-V import, the virtual machine is registered with the Hyper-V host.
