In this video, I'll show you how to use the new Duplicate Photos utility in iOS 16, to find and delete copies to clean up your photos library.
Duplicate photos are just another of the many new features in Apple's latest iOS 16 release. This allows you to find and merge or delete copies of photos to save even more space on your iPhone.
Before you begin, you need to be updated to the latest version of iOS, which is now iOS 16. To check your iOS version, simply go to the Settings app. Inside here, scroll down and tap General, then Software Update. If you haven't updated yet, you can start the process here.
Once you're on iOS 16, let's see how to find duplicate photos. Start by opening the Photos app.
Inside here, scroll to the bottom of the menu.
Then you will find the Duplicates option. Choose this. You will then be redirected to a folder containing all the duplicate images found on your device.
According to Apple, duplicates are classified as exact copies, but may differ in metadata, as well as copies that may be taken in different file formats, resolutions, or other slight differences.
To merge and delete the copy of the photo, tap merge to the right of the image.
You will then get a pop-up informing you that by merging you will only keep the highest quality version of the image, and with the best and most relevant metadata. To merge and remove the copy, tap merge items.
It will then delete the copy and move it to the recently deleted list. These photos will then be permanently deleted from your device within 40 days, freeing up more space on your iPhone.
And that's how you find and delete copies of photos from your iPhone using iOS 16.
