We're talking about the little pop-up window saying "Audio service is not working" that many Windows 10 users see in the bottom right corner of their screen. If you are also seeing the same error, it simply means that your system audio devices are not working. As irritating as it may seem, the good news is that it is possible to resolve the “Audio service is not running” error. In today's episode, we will discuss different methods to fix the said error and restore audio playback on your computer.

2:11 Solution 1: Restart Windows Audio Services
Windows Audio Service is a dedicated built-in program responsible for running and managing audios on your Windows system.
Step 1 – To restart the Windows audio service, open the Run window and type “services.msc”. Press Enter and you will be prompted to go to the Windows Service screen.
Step 2 – You will see a list of all active Windows services on your system. Here locate the “Windows Audio” option and right-click on it. Then click on the “Restart” button.
Step 3 – Again, right-click on Windows Audio and press “Properties”. Using the drop-down menu, change the startup type to “Automatic”.

3:10 Solution 2: Check audio settings and hardware issues
Step 1 – Locate these three services
RPC Endpoint Mapper
Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
DCOM Server Process Launcher
Then, right-click on each of these services and click on the “Start” button to activate them.
Step 2 – Again, change the startup type of these services to “Automatic” in the “Properties” window. Once the process is completed, simply restart your system and check whether the “Audio service is not responding” error is fixed or not.

4:05 Solution 3: Disable audio enhancements in Windows 10/11
Step 1 – Open Cortana search bar and type “sound”. Double-click the first search result to open the audio control panel.
Step 2 – Right-click on the primary audio device and press “Properties”.
Step 3 – Finally, go to the “Enhancements” tab and check the “Turn off audio enhancements” box. Click OK to save your changes. This will disable all audio enhancements and you will not see the “Audio service is not responding” error.

5:02 Solution 4: Update HD audio CODEC and other drivers
Step 1 – Press WindowsX and click “Device Manager”. Expand the “Sound, video and game controllers” category and right-click IDT High Definition Audio CODEC.
Step 2 – Now, click “Update Drivers” and follow the on-screen instructions to update the selected drivers to the latest version.

5:40 p.m. Solution 5: Manually add network and audio services
Now, if the audio services are still not responding, the next step would be to manually add the network and audio services via command prompt.
Step 1 – First, run Command Prompt as administrator.
Step 2 – Type “Net local group administrators / add network service” and press Enter
Step 3 – Again, type “net localgroup Administrators /add localservice” and press Enter.

6:20 Solution 6: Run Windows Audio Troubleshooter
Finally, if nothing works in your favor, the last resort would be to run the Windows Audio Troubleshooter. This is a built-in Windows utility specially designed to resolve various audio-related errors in Windows.
Step 1 – To run the audio troubleshooter, open the “Settings” window and click “Update & Security”.
Step 2 – Select “Troubleshooting” and tap “Additional Troubleshooters”. Next, expand the “Audio Playback” option and click “Run the troubleshooter”.
Again, follow the on-screen instructions to resolve audio-related errors on your computer.
