In this video, I explain how to install and play Elden Ring on Windows 11 and suggest methods to minimize FPS drops and stuttering, especially when running the game on Nvidia hardware.

Step 1. Install Elden Ring.

To my knowledge, Elden Ring is exclusive to Steam.

However, you may be able to find it discounted on sites like CD Keys.

Once purchased, install the game using Steam as usual. However, I highly recommend installing this game on an SSD or NVME due to the previously mentioned shader cache issue.

Once the game is installed, launch it at least once, choose your graphics settings, then close the game.

Step 2. Change the power plan to High Performance.

By default, Windows 11 will default to the Balanced Power Plan to balance performance and power consumption, by limiting your CPU clock speed.

However, for gaming, the High Performance plan should be used instead, as it sets the minimum and maximum CPU state to 100%.

In other words, your CPU clock speed will be set to maximum, which can reduce stuttering, especially when the game compiles shaders.

The easiest way to make this change is to type "power plan" into the Start menu and open the "Choose a power plan option" search result.

From there, check the High performance option and close the window.

Step 3. Set Elden Ring graphics preference to High performance.

Not to be confused with the High Performance Power Plan, you can also configure the game itself in High Performance mode.

To enable this, open the Start menu, search for “graphics” and open the “Graphics Settings” search result.

From there, find the game in the list under Custom Application Options, click Options, check the High Performance option, then click Save.

Close the window when finished.

Step 4. Set Nvidia Shader Cache Size to Unlimited.

Open the Nvidia Control Panel, go to 3D Settings/Manage 3D Settings, then select Global Settings.

About halfway down the list is the shader cache size. So click on the drop-down menu in the Settings section and select Unlimited from the list.

Click Apply at the bottom of the window to confirm.
