First, you need to post multiple times a day. I remember I only posted on Twitter once or twice. And we recently tested this again.
I've done this test posting on Twitter a few times, but testing things out over time. So we recently did a test over a period of one week. During this test, we decided to only post once a day. When we did this over a seven-day period, we received an average of 749 visitors for the entire week. It's not so bad.
Then we decided to do a test where we started posting 40 times a day. I know it's crazy and insane. I'm not kidding, 40 times! Traffic hasn't increased 40-fold, but it has increased. Twitter traffic increased from 749 to 5,623. The only difference was posting once a day and posting 40 times a day.
So if you're wondering how often you should post on Twitter, well, this is how much content you should post. If you only have enough content to post once or twice a day, this isn't a problem. You can post other status updates, photos, whatever. But ideally, aim to post on Twitter at least 10 times a day.
If you do this, you will get more traffic from Twitter. It's so simple. Now not all of your posts need to contain links, but some can. I try to put almost all of mine with links.
And when I'm not doing that, I'm trying to engage with the community, have conversations, respond to others. When you respond to other people in your field, you will get more engagement.
So when you post links to your site, more people will click on them!
