Your grade point average (GPA) is essentially a number that indicates your average performance in your classes. It is usually calculated on a scale of 1.0 and 4.0 by averaging the grades from all your courses. Your GPA isn't everything, but it is important! So, if you still have time to significantly improve your academic performance, you should take the necessary steps to achieve this. Most applicants aren't fans of personal statements, career goal statements, or any other type of admissions essay, but one of the best things about them is that they give you the opportunity to speak to the admissions officer who will read your application. We're not saying you should use your entire grad school admissions essay to explain your grades, but you can answer it. That said, if you choose to improve your grades, you should also mention the steps you have taken to ensure that your academic performance will not suffer in the future.
Getting into a top college or university with a low GPA requires some elbow grease but is not impossible. If you are still in school, you should work hard to increase your GPA. However, if it's too late to raise your GPA, you need to make sure the rest of your application is compelling enough to make up for your low GPA.
