When you’re craving something sweet and refreshing to munch on there are few things more tempting than a nice big slice of watermelon. Unfortunately you can’t just dive into that juicy fruit without getting a mouth full of seeds. Even so-called “seedless” watermelons leave behind hard pits in your mouth as they contain unripe seeds that are safe to eat but not exactly pleasant in texture. Luckily there’s a simple way to cut watermelon that makes it easy to remove the seeds.

Start by picking out a good watermelon from the grocery store. The most efficient way to cut and core it is to slice off a small amount of the top and bottom of the melon so that you can stand it upright without it falling over. You can also cut the fruit in half at the equator to make it more manageable. Once it’s upright you can easily slice off the rind into long strips (save them to make canned rinds one of the more creative ways to use leftover watermelon). Now comes the very important part. Slice the melon vertically the opposite of what many people do. Aim for slices that are about an inch thick.

When you do this you will see that the seeds are concentrated in two lines that run on either side of the watermelon slice. Use your hands to break the slices along the seed veins. They should break easily and form three parts. This will expose the seeds which you can easily scrape off.

Once you break the melon slices the rows of seeds should concentrate on the edges. At this point you can quickly remove them. You can either use a chopstick or toothpick to pick out the seeds or simply run a knife along the edge to scrape them off en masse.
