The PlayStation 5 (PS5) is a home video game console developed by Sony Interactive Entertainment. Announced in 2019 as the successor to the PlayStation 4, the PS5 was released on November 12, 2020 in Australia, Japan, New Zealand, North America and South Korea, with a global release a week later. The PS5 is part of the ninth generation of video game consoles, alongside Microsoft's Xbox Series X and Series S consoles, released the same month.
The base model includes an optical disc drive compatible with Ultra HD Blu-ray discs. The Digital Edition does not have this player, allowing it to serve as a less expensive model for those who prefer to purchase games via digital download. Both variants were launched simultaneously.
Key hardware features of the PlayStation 5 include a custom SSD for high-speed data streaming to enable significant storage performance improvements, an AMD GPU capable of displaying 4K resolution at up to 120 frames per second, Hardware-accelerated ray tracing for realistic rendering. lighting and reflections, as well as the Tempest engine enabling hardware-accelerated 3D audio effects.
