One of the most common reasons people buy a brand new smartphone is because their current device no longer works as well as it used to. It's usually a slow, gradual process that many people don't notice at first, but after a few years we start to find that even the most basic tasks take longer than expected.

As we install new OTA updates, the operating system itself becomes more demanding in terms of the hardware required to accomplish said tasks. This also happens slowly and over time when we install the latest update for our apps and games. After a few years, your favorite application must compete to stay relevant and, in doing so, ends up adding features and changes that reduce the performance of aging hardware.

In today's video I want to show you two Developer Options settings that you can change that will help improve the overall Android user experience on very old smartphones and tablets.

That you simply can't afford a newer device. . .or you like the one you have so much that you don't want to upgrade. Over time, Android can slow down and make it painful to use because of all the lags and stutters you experience.

Fortunately, Android comes with customization options that we can find in a hidden menu in the Settings app that can help alleviate some of these issues that we've started to notice.

But before we can get started, we need to enable developer mode on our device.
If this is something you've never done before, be sure to check out the video description below because I'll link to some previous guides that can help you get up to speed so you can find this hidden menu of developer options.

Now scroll down and you should find an Applications section.
Here we want to look for the option /"Background process limit/" and configure this setting to /"At most 4 processes/".

This will prevent more than 4 apps from being cached in memory. This won't stop your phone from running important services in the background (like Gmail and Messages). Instead, it just helps prevent your phone from being overloaded with cached data so your phone doesn't have to do as much rearranging when it comes to opening and closing apps once. once you have reached your hardware limit.

The next thing I would recommend to those who own an old Android smartphone or tablet is to reduce or completely disable the animations. This can also be done in the Developer Options menu, and you'll find the section just above the one we were looking for before. So just scroll up a little and look for the three options related to animations on Android.

I know what it can be like to want to use an Android smartphone for longer than recommended. I loved my Galaxy Note 10 smartphone and wanted to continue using it for longer than was viable due to performance issues. But such changes can help increase the longevity of your smartphone by returning performance to what it was when you first opened the box.
