Ideally sloe berries are picked after the first frost but when they are ripe and ready to pick depends on where you live. Expect to be looking for sloe berries from late August through October. Luckily that is still enough time to soak them for Christmas.

However unlike biting into a ripe juicy grape will be a pleasure to eat a blackthorn it will be a serious disappointment. The fruit is hard and the taste bitter and grainy.
