For as long as I can remember I’ve preferred pear pie to apple pie. It’s not that I don’t like apple pie (it would be a bit odd not to like apple pie) but I enjoy the subtle barely floral fruit flavor that pears bring to a sticky pie filling. And that’s not to mention the fact that pear is the first kind of pie I ever learned to make.
My great-grandmother had an Anjou pear tree in her backyard and growing up I would gather brown paper bags full of pears as the fruit fell to the ground. It was “my” job from a young age and I took great pride in it. We would give some of the bags of fresh fruit as gifts to her neighbors and bake pies for the family with the leftovers. And that’s where my baking adventure began — in GG’s kitchen making pear pies.
