I have quite a few wooden cutting boards wooden handled knives and wooden spoons in my kitchen as I’m sure most of you do. One of the things that annoys me the most about taking care of them is that almost all of the products that go into this task are mineral oil based. Take spoon butter for example. It’s usually a mixture of beeswax and mineral oil. You rub it into cutting boards and spoons to hydrate them prevent cracking and repel water. The wood absorbs it beautifully. I’ve been thinking for years that there needs to be an alternative to mineral oil based spoon butter. It’s a byproduct of petroleum production and not something I want to ingest.
