How to make the perfect cappuccino

A cappuccino is an Italian coffee drink traditionally made with equal parts double espresso steamed milk and steamed milk foam on top. Cream may be used in place of the milk. It is typically smaller in volume than a latte and has a thicker layer of microfoam. Espresso is typically made with dark roasted coffee and finely ground.

In Italian cappuccino means “little cap” which aptly describes the head of foam that sits atop the drink’s espresso base. Historically it’s also said to derive from the attire of the Capuchin monk order. With their iconic brown robes and shaved heads Capuchin monks look a lot like the ring of crema and white foam that tops the classic drink.

Microfoam is frothed/steamed milk in which the bubbles are so small and numerous that they are invisible but they make the milk lighter and thicker. When the espresso is poured correctly the microfoam will remain partially on top of the mug and mix well with the rest of the cappuccino.
