Peeling ginger with a spoon | Everyday Gourmet S8 E66

Ginger is the star of countless savory and sweet dishes and that classic peppery warm flavor that ginger is known for actually comes from the rhizome of a flowering plant (fun fact: it’s a perennial) known as ginger root. And if you’ve ever cooked with it in your kitchen you know that working with and peeling fresh ginger can be quite the challenge due to its irregular bumps.

As mentioned the edible part of the ginger plant comes from the root of the plant which grows in all sorts of shapes and sizes making it traditionally difficult to find a safe way to peel the plant with a vegetable peeler or knife. That’s why ginger is so often sold dried and already peeled and grated in frozen form making it much easier to enjoy in gingerbread cookies and aromatic proteins. But peeling ginger is much easier (and safer) than you might think thanks to a simple tool my dad showed me: a spoon.

The lightly browned skin around ginger is delicate so while you might think you can seamlessly peel ginger with a paring knife or a box grater the mixture of uneven bumps and grooves is unsafe and not worth the effort of cutting. That’s where a spoon comes in handy and it couldn’t be easier. All you have to do is press the tip of the spoon down onto the ginger with the bowl instead of up and drag it along the outside of the ginger. You’ll be amazed at how smooth and seamless the whole process is. Besides giving you a surprisingly smooth skin every time it’s a much safer way to peel ginger to avoid accidentally cutting yourself.
