This tutorial does not require YouTube Premium and should work on both Apple iPhones and iPads. The key to playing YouTube in the background is to play YouTube in desktop mode. This method works in almost all mobile browsers, including Safari, Chrome, and Firefox. Follow the steps below to listen to YouTube with the screen off or in the background:
1. Open https://youtube.com in Safari browser.
2. Find a video you want to listen to with the screen off or in the background.
3. In the browser, select the aA symbol to open the reading menu and select Request Desktop Website. This will load the desktop version of YouTube.
4. Once in desktop mode, play the video.
5. Exit the browser and go to the home screen.
6. Swipe to open Control Center.
7. In Control Center, select the play button.
8. Enjoy listening to YouTube in the background or with the screen off. It may take a few seconds for the audio to play. If that doesn't work, repeat the steps above.
