Broccoli (Brassica oleracea) is a member of the cabbage family. It comes in a number of varieties the most common of which is Calabrian broccoli with its large flower heads and sturdy coarse stems. Calabrian broccoli is usually what we think of when we think "broccoli." Look for purple varieties; you can sometimes find them in stores and at farmers markets.
