How to remove file type associations in Windows 11 – How to remove a default app for a file type extension in Windows 11

In this video I'll show you how to remove the default application that you have associated with a certain file type extension. By default, some file type extensions are not associated with any program or application and therefore cannot be opened or executed. During your troubleshooting to open or run this file, you may have associated it with a certain application such as Notepad for example. Now you don't like that Notepad was associated with this file type extension and want to remove the default app for it so that the icon for this file type extension is white and virgin, as it was originally.

Steps to remove default application associated with file type extension in Windows:
1. Left-click on the Windows Start icon in your taskbar
2. Click the search box at the top of the Start menu
3. Search for /"File Explorer Options/"
4. Click File Explorer Options for the best match or Open to open your File Explorer options.
5. Click Show
6. Uncheck the box /"Hide extensions for known file types/"
7. Click Apply then OK
8. Right-click on an empty area on your desktop
9. Hover over /"New/" and click on /"Text Document/"
10. Rename the new text document on your desktop by removing the file name including the .txt file type extension
11. Rename the file and add a random filename extension after the name, for example .jak4.
12. Press Enter on your keyboard
13. Click Yes
14. Right-click on the file for which you want to remove the default application.
15. Click Properties
16. Click Edit
17. Click Choose an app on your PC
18. Click the arrow next to Programs (*.exe;*.pif;*.com;*bat;*cmd) in the lower right corner of the window /"Open with…/" and select All files (*.*)
19. Locate the file with the random file type extension you created and click on it to select it.
20. Click Open
21. Click /"Set as default/". You will now notice that your file is no longer associated with a default application. It now has a blank white icon
22. Now you can delete the file with random file type extension
23. Now all you have to do is open the File Explorer backup options, click Show and check the Hide extensions for known file types box again.

Congratulations, you have successfully removed the default application for your chosen file type extension. The icon is now white, as it originally was.
