FAQs
Q: My keyboard isn't working enough to follow these steps. What can I do?
A: If your keyboard doesn't work well enough to follow these steps, try using an external keyboard. They will usually plug into a USB port and should allow you to perform these troubleshooting steps. You can also try reinstalling the keyboard cable to see if that helps.

Q: My keycap doesn't click into place properly. What's wrong?
A: If your key cap does not snap into place properly, it is likely because the retaining clip is not properly installed or is damaged. Remove the cap and check for damage or if it is not laying flat and properly snapping into place. Compare with another clip if necessary by removing another cap.

Q: The retainer clip/hinge clip does not stay in place on the keyboard.
A: The retaining clip must be attached to both the keycap and the keyboard. If it does not attach properly to the keyboard, it is because the keyboard pins are bent, the retaining clip is damaged, or the retaining clip is not oriented correctly. If you can't figure it out by just looking at the clip, which is sometimes difficult to do, remove another key cap and compare the correctly installed retaining clip to yours.

Q: The hinge clips came loose with the key cap. What should I do?
A: Since the key generally cannot be reinstalled with the retaining clip and key cap still attached to each other, you will need to separate them as shown here, using a small flat pry bar.

Q: Where can I purchase replacement keys?
A: If any component of the key is broken, it will need to be replaced. I usually get my keys from Ebay or www.replacementlaptopkeys.com. If you can't find a bulk key for sale, you may need to purchase a keyboard and grab a key from it.

Q: I have one or more keys that are not working. Will this fix them?
A: This video is a tutorial on how to replace a key. If your keys are not working but are not mechanically broken, troubleshoot them as shown here; https://youtu.be/wqrchfpdJ_w.

Q: The hinge clip has come apart in two pieces. How can I go back up?
A: They fit together using a small plastic pin to the left and right of the inner clip. These fit into the holes in the outer clip. To see exactly how the inner clip sits within the outer clip, remove another keycap and copy the clip underneath.

Q: The rubber spring has come loose. How can I reattach it?
A: There isn't really a good way to tie them together. They are not intended to be replaced. The best advice is to try using a small amount of glue. If this doesn't work, you may need to replace the keyboard.
