How to Make Moka Pot Coffee and Espresso – The BEST Way (Tutorial)

To get a really good cup of espresso you need a good espresso machine but most of us can’t afford to have a professional machine at home and unfortunately some espresso machines made for home use produce really inferior coffee. However most Italians make their morning espresso with a stovetop coffee maker called a moka first produced in 1933 by the Bialetti company. These stovetop kettles use steam pressure to push water up through the coffee grounds and into a separate serving chamber. They are inexpensive lightweight easy to use and quickly brew a great cup of coffee in just a few minutes. Keep in mind that this type of pot works best on a gas stove; the aluminum pots don’t work on induction stovetops and an electric burner is too difficult to regulate.

Technically it’s not the same as espresso as it’s made at a much lower pressure than a professional espresso machine. However if you use good quality coffee with the correct grind for moka pots (a medium grind not as fine as an espresso machine) it will produce pretty good results even with a bit of crema on top: the coveted layer of light foam on a well-brewed cup of espresso.
