In this video I'll show you how to use the Google app on an iPhone to access Google Lens. Google Lens is a very useful feature that most people still don't realize is available. You can use Lens to identify anything from plants like trees or flowers, to animals, or to objects or tools you have in your home.

I've used Lens to make sure some plants I walk through aren't poisonous and I've used it to replace broken items, but I can't remember the name of the specific thing or what it was intended for.

We will see how to download the Google app and how to use Lens. First, go to the App Store and search for the basic Google app. Download the app or, if you've already downloaded it, make sure it's up to date.

Once the installation is complete, open Google. The first time you open the app, you should be prompted with a few prompts. If you want real-time alerts for things like weather or news, you can allow it here. Next, select whether you want to allow notifications from Google.

Now on the home page, take a look at the search bar at the top. On the far right you will see a camera icon. This is the new lens icon. Tap it.

You will then get a pop-up informing you that Google Lens is only using your camera to search for results when the app is open or when you are accessing your photo library. You can then tap Open Photo Gallery and then give the level of access you want to give Google for this.

If you choose Select Photos, your Photo Library will open, where you can choose only the photos you want Google to have access to. The next option is to allow access to all photos. Choose this and you will then see all your photos in the Google app. And finally, if you don't want Google to have access to photos, choose Don't allow. For this example, I will choose all photos.

Next, and the important step for what we will use most of the time, is access to the camera. Allowing Google to access your camera lets the app see what you're pointing at, allowing for real-time identification. Choose Ok.

First we'll look at how to sing the camera to identify a leaf. At the top of the screen, tap the camera icon above search with your camera. The camera will then open and you can point at the object you want to identify. When the object is in the frame, press the search or shutter button.

Google Lens will then search for the image and give you the results found on the web along with the image at the bottom. You can then scroll through the results, and when you find one you want to explore further, simply select it and it will take you to the web page with the information.

The information can be anything it finds on the web. If it was a plant, it can show you how to care for it, or if it was an item, it can give you a link to Amazon to buy it.

Next we will see how to use Google Lens on a photo that we took in the past and that is in our camera roll. Return to the main Google Lens page. Again, if you're on the main Google home page, just tap the camera icon in the search bar.

Under the Camera section at the top, you will then see screenshots and all images if you have allowed Google to access all your photos. Find and choose the image you want to identify. Google will then automatically start the search and again give you the results at the bottom, which you can then browse and hopefully find what you are looking for.

One tip is that if you don't get useful results right away, maybe try taking the photos from different angles or including as many elements in the view. It may take a few tries to get it to match the item.

And that's how you use Google Lens to identify an object on an iPhone.
