Basic use of QR code
The most basic (and popular) use of QR codes is to display information on a website (a website address). Let's say you're at a trade show and you walk past my booth. You want to know more about my business, so you open your phone and start fumbling around trying to type a long URL (which is on my screen) into your browser, and off you go.
What they are NOT used for
I've seen people put QR codes on their website and frankly it defeats the purpose and no one will ever scan them. The goal is to move people from the physical world to the online world. If someone is already browsing your website, Facebook page, Twitter, or certain online “properties,” they are already there. If I'm on my phone, I can now scan my phone's screen exactly with my phone's camera, right?

Creating your own QR code couldn't be simpler. There are countless websites online that allow you to easily generate a QR code image. You take the image they give you and you print it on whatever you want, you place it wherever you want, it's a "label" so to speak. Here's one to get you started:
