In this video we take a look at Windows' built-in screen reader, Narrator. In Windows, Narrator has become truly great, and people who are blind or visually impaired will find that it can work well to help them perform many of the most important tasks on the computer.

This is part one of our series on using Narrator with Microsoft Word, where we cover the basics of opening Word, typing, then navigating and listening to what we have typed. Here we cover some basic keyboard commands that are useful in many different applications:

ControlWindowsEnter – Activates Narrator
ControlHome – Moves to start of document
ControlEnd – Moves to end of document
Home – Moves to start of line
End: goes to the end of the line
Caps LockDown Arrow – Reads cursor to end of document
Up and down arrows – Move lines up and down and read them
Left and right arrows – moves letter by letter
ControlLeft and Right Arrows – Moves word by word
