Here's a first look at Apple's new Satellite Messages feature in iOS 18! If you've ever found yourself off-grid, without a cell signal or Wi-Fi, this new feature will be a game-changer. I'm going to walk you through a live demo that I experienced at WWDC, showing you exactly how to connect and send iMessage and SMS text messages, complete with tapbacks and emojis, all via satellite. This feature builds on Apple's previous satellite offerings like Emergency SOS and Roadside Assistance, ensuring you stay connected wherever you are.
Whether it's through a notification on the lock screen, a prompt in the dynamic island, or the satellite option in settings, you'll always know when you can use this feature. The connection process explains how to connect to satellites traveling at 15,000 miles per hour, 800 miles above Earth. Dynamic Island will keep you informed of the status of your connection, ensuring that you are always in the right position to maintain communication.
While this feature only supports text, tapbacks, and emojis (no images or videos), it's a huge step forward for staying in touch when you're off the grid. iMessages remain end-to-end encrypted for your privacy. For SMS conversations, you will need to initiate them to avoid spam, but you will still be able to check your messages once connected to a satellite. This addition to Apple's satellite services ensures that whether you're out in the wilderness or traveling, you can always reach your loved ones.
