Sara Lee – The Overlooked History
Frozen dessert is one of the highlights of party convenience. The ability to grab and go or bake and go is a luxury we’ve all been grateful for at one time or another. It’s a fact that the folks at Sara Lee have capitalized on since they opened their first business in 1935: three community-focused neighborhood bakeries. Those bakeries flourished and made Sara Lee a household name and today that signature red ribbon logo still fills freezers and bread shelves everywhere.
Normally I’m determined to make these taste tests as controlled as possible or as the saying goes compare apples to apples. For our biscuit taste test I compared straight biscuit to straight biscuit not biscuit to biscuit sandwich. How do you compare a regular item to an item that has bacon in it? It’s just not a fair fight.
But with the task of a Sara Lee Frozen dessert comparison I just didn’t have that luxury. Apples and oranges should be a thing—or in this case cheesecake and pound cake and coffee cake and pie. (I know it’s a terrible problem to have.)
